Warehouse navigation – narrow aisles

1. Basic characteristics

  • Efficiency increased by up to 25%
  • Alleviating operator stress
  • Automatic responses without scanning
  • Preventing stacking/retrieval in incorrect locations
  • Less damage on the racking
  • Can be used with and without warehouse management system

RFID technology and the Jungheinrich Logistics Interface make it possible: The narrow aisle truck continually feeds back its location via transponders in the floor. Orders received from the warehouse management system are transmitted to the truck’s radio data terminal. The terminal’s Logistics Interface translates the data and passes on the information directly to the truck controller. This means the truck knows the exact destination to approach. The operator simply has to give the travel and lift commands and the truck will approach the pallet location automatically in diagonal travel.

2. Advantages in overview

  • Improved productivity and relieving the stress on your operators
  • IT integration via Logistics Interface
  • Truck functions
  • Stand-alone solutions

3. Advantages in detail

In the shortest time and over the shortest distance, with as much energy as required and as little uses as possible – the semi-automatic, precise approach saves time and money. Productivity increases by up to 25%. Stacking and retrieval quality improves. Errors are avoided; the truck reaches the locations specified by the system semi-automatically and with 100% reliability. It is impossible for operators to take the wrong route or pick the wrong items; the stress on operators is significantly reduced as there is no need for constant re-orientation. In addition, there is less damage to racking as the forks are automatically and precisely positioned.

– Truck functionsThe functionality of the warehouse navigation includes, for example, the active reach control in conjunction with load sensing, which avoids a costly ‘resetting’ of the load in the rack or when removing the load from the rack. Another product feature is the intelligent destination position control, which notifies the operator of any special characteristics of the storage location as soon as the order is assigned. For example, in the case of a dead-end aisle and standard entry in the drive direction, the truck identifies that the last storage locations in this aisle can only be approached in the load direction. As the operator is informed of this in good time, time-consuming incorrect journeys can be prevented.

IT integration via Logistics InterfaceIn order to precisely reach the next stacking, retrieval or picking position, this location must be communicated to the truck. The optimum increase in efficiency can only be ensured if your operator does not have to make any manual input. That is why, with Logistics Interface, we offer the option to automatically transmit orders from any warehouse management system in the background without a time delay and to send them to the truck controller. This simple integration into existing systems makes a significant contribution to the success of the implementation phase.

Stand-alone solutionsYou don’t use a warehouse management system but, nevertheless, would like to benefit from the many advantages of warehouse navigation? No problem, because we can also supply the perfect solutions for your operations without IT integration: You can either use a barcode scanner to transmit the order directly to the truck controller or an input screen designed especially for you on a radio data terminal functioning as an interface between operator and warehouse navigation.

Transponders are used to control the Jungheinrich guided narrow aisle trucks. The transponder dimensions are 9 x 16 mm and they are inserted in the warehouse floor at specific intervals. The trucks are equipped with an RFID reader/writer that communicates with the transponders and selects and uses the following information:

  • A) Aisle and warehouse zone identification
  • B) Referencing of the route measurement within the aisles.

Armed with the above information and the truck’s route measuring system, the system allows locations to be determined precisely within the aisles at all times. The transponders are programmed by the truck. The mapping of the entire system is stored in the truck itself. This means that switching and safety functions can be activated at any point, such as speed reduction for crossing escape routes or lift cut-out in aisles with limited overhead clearances.
